A Longitudinal Study on the Relationships between Parenting and Psychiatric Symptoms
Kahng Sang-Kyoung

Jeon Hae-Sook
Abstract
Although previous literature indicates that psychiatric symptoms are negatively associated with parenting, little is known about the longitudinal relationship between the two. In order to address the limitation, this study examines the relationships via latent growth curve modeling to study the dynamic relationship between psychiatric symptoms and parenting among women with serious mental illnesses using a panel data developed in the US. Findings indicate that the trajectory of psychiatric symptoms is associated with parenting trajectories both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Cross sectional relationships replicated the findings of previous studies, indicating that the higher levels of symptoms are associated with more negative parenting (i.e., higher parenting stress and lower parenting nurturance). However, those with higher initial psychiatric symptoms presented more positive parenting trajectories over time (i.e., faster decreases in parenting stress and slower decreases in parenting nurturance), indicating that impaired parenting due to symptoms is not permanent but resilient. Based on the results, contributions to knowledge, implications, and limitations of the study are discussed.
